A brief history of Columbia
The earliest written records show that in May 1540 Hernando de Soto's Spanish expedition moved through the area that is now Columbia. At the time the area was inhabited by the people called the Congaree.
On March 22, 1786 the legislature voted to create a new state capitol, Columbia. After two decades of direct government of the legislature, Columbia received a charter as a town in 1805, and in 1854, became a city.
